Chief Robert MacDonald is pleased to announce that two members of the Dighton Police Department were promoted during a ceremony held earlier this week.

At a ceremony held during the Dighton Board of Selectmen’s meeting on Wednesday, April 6, Dighton Police Officers Christopher Magan and Jason McGovern were promoted to the rank of sergeant. They were officially sworn into their new rank by Assistant Town Clerk Pamela Tenglin.

“On behalf of the Dighton Police Department, we would like to congratulate and recognize Christopher Magan and Jason McGovern as our two newest sergeants,” Chief MacDonald said. “The Dighton community is very lucky to have them both serving the community as they each bring unique experiences and perspectives to their new rank. We look forward to developing them into leaders within our department and community.”

Sgt. Christopher Magan

Sgt. Magan joined the Dighton Police Department as a full-time patrolman in 2014. Prior to joining the department, he worked as an officer for the Somerset Police Department, a public safety dispatcher for the Rehoboth Police Department and as a call firefighter for the Rehoboth Fire Department.

He also worked as a reserve officer for the Dighton Police Department from July 2010 to May 2012.

Since joining the Dighton Police Department, Sgt. Magan worked as a School Resource Officer during the 2016-17 school year, served as the department’s CJIS Representative, was a member of the regional SEMLEC Search & Rescue Team and is an evidence officer.

Sgt. Magan was raised in Rehoboth and graduated from Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School in 2003. He then attended Bridgewater State University where he graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in criminal justice through a 5-year joint degree program.

Sgt. Jason McGovern

Sgt. McGovern is a second-generation police officer as his father worked for the Taunton Police Department for over 40 years. He began his career at the Dean College Campus Police in 2001, where he became a Sergeant before leaving the department in 2011. Sgt. McGovern also worked for the Berkley Police Department before joining the Dighton Police Department in 2018.

Since joining the Dighton Police Department, Sgt. McGovern serves as one of the department’s firearms and taser instructors. He is also a member of two separate regional teams, the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (SEMLEC) SWAT Team and SEMLEC Search and Rescue Team.

In his new role, Sgt. McGovern will be responsible for supervising the patrol division on the dayshift and working with other command staff members to create and implement new department policies and procedures.
