Downed Trees, Power Lines Cause Widespread Power Outages
Town Administrator Michael Mullen, Police Chief Robert MacDonald, Fire Chief Christopher Maguy and Highway Superintendent Thomas Ferry report that town officials, employees and emergency personnel are actively responding to calls for service during the Nor’easter storm.
Dighton Fire, Police and Highway Department personnel have been working diligently since approximately 3:30 a.m. this morning to clear downed trees and power lines from roadways in numerous areas throughout the community.
At this time, town officials strongly encourage residents to avoid non-essential travel due to dangerous road conditions caused by downed trees and wires. Town officials ask that residents to currently avoid the following roadways: Horton Street, Maple Street, Maple Swamp Road, Wheeler Street, Spring Street, Forest Street, Milk Street, Middle Street and Chestnut Street.
“Our first responders and emergency crews are working tirelessly to clear roadways to ensure public safety for Dighton residents,” Town Administrator Mullen said. “We ask everyone to be patient as the Dighton Fire, Police and Highway Departments continue responding to emergency situations in town, and as we await updated information from National Grid relating to power restoration.”
Town offices will be closed today due to the Nor’easter storm. Residents should note that the Town’s public meetings scheduled for tonight, including the Board of Selectmen and Zoning Board of Appeals Meetings, will continue as planned.
Power Outages
Of Dighton’s 2,840 customers served, there are currently 1,660 power outages throughout the town, according to National Grid’s Outage Map. Crews are working hard to restore power as quickly as possible.
National Grid has been in communication with Dighton town officials with the company reinforcing its immediate plans to continue working with Dighton’s Fire, Police and Highway Department to assist in clearing major roadways along with responding to 9-1-1 emergency calls. Town officials will be closely monitoring power restoration efforts.
Residents are reminded to not call 9-1-1 to report an outage or to ask about power restoration. Instead, residents should report an outage or downed power line to National Grid at 800-465-1212 or by visiting their online site.
Residents are also reminded to stay away from all downed power lines and never go near or touch them for any reason.
