Library Director Jocelyn Tavares is pleased to share Dighton Public Library’s upcoming summer programming opportunities, and encourages residents to attend.
“Throughout the summer we are pleased to offer numerous programming opportunities that allow us to engage with our patrons and community in new and unique ways,” Director Tavares said. “We encourage all of our community members to take advantage of these opportunities and we wish everyone a happy summer!”
This summer’s library programming includes “Virtual Chats with a Zookeeper” and “Pop Up Libraries” at Dighton’s parks and playgrounds. To view all of Dighton Public Library’s upcoming events, click here.
Virtual Chats with a Zookeeper
The Dighton Public Library will be offering virtual chats with a zookeeper from the Buttonwood Park on Wednesdays throughout July and August beginning at 3 p.m. Virtual chats include the following:
- Meet a Tortoise: On Wednesday, July 14, residents can virtually meet Dottie the red-footed tortoise. To sign-up for the Zoom, click here.
- Meet an Elephant: On Wednesday, July 21, residents can virtually meet Ruth, a 61-year-old elephant, and Emily, a 55-year-old elephant. To sign-up for the Zoom, click here.
- Meet a Red Panda: On Wednesday, July 28, residents can virtually meet Kodo, a red panda cub who was born last summer. To sign-up for the Zoom, click here.
- Meet a Fennec Fox: On Wednesday, Aug. 11, residents can virtually meet a fox that lives in the desert and is nocturnal. To sign-up for the Zoom, click here.
- Meet a Sloth: On Wednesday, Aug. 18, residents can virtually meet Bernardo, a 16-year-old two-toed sloth, who was the first two-toed sloth to call Buttonwood home. To sign-up for the Zoom, click here.

To coincide with this programming, the Dighton Public Library has created a Summer Reading Challenge that celebrates the Tails and Tales summer reading theme. The Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program began on June 19 and will run throughout Sept. 22. The program includes interactive challenges for kids, teens and adults – as well as a mindfulness challenge. To register, click here.
The Virtual Chats with a Zookeeper are sponsored by the CARES Act. CARES Act funding was administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners to the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Dighton Public Library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
Pop-Up Library
The Dighton Public Library will hit the road this summer with a pop-up library at parks and playgrounds throughout Dighton each week. The pop-up libraries will feature a collection of library materials for families to browse and check out right at the park.
- Tuesdays’ pop-up libraries are at the School Lane Playground (near the library, at the corner of School Lane and Palmer Street)
- Wednesdays’ pop-up libraries will rotate among four parks:
- July 7 is Lane Field on Main Street, right before Shaw’s Boat Yard
- July 14 is Tricentennial Park, at the Corner of Water and Pleasant Street
- July 21 is Osprey Landing, on Boat Ramp Road
- July 28 is at the Tennis and Basketball Courts on Somerset Avenue
- Thursdays’ pop-up libraries are at the North Dighton Playground and Ball Field, at the corner of Prospect Street and School Street
- Fridays’ pop-up libraries are at the Dighton Community Playground, next to Dighton Town Hall
Each pop-up library will be available between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents are encouraged to pick up a passport to record their visit at each location throughout the summer to win a prize.
