Library Director Jocelyn Tavares is pleased to announce that the Dighton Public Library has received a $1,900 grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners to fund remote and virtual programming amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) awarded 27 grants totaling $72,461 to public and school libraries across the Commonwealth through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding that was distributed by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
A portion of Dighton Public Library’s $1,900 grant will be used to fund the library’s own Zoom account and a tripod. The remaining funds will be used to supplement the costs of virtual hobby programs.
“Before this unprecedented health crisis, our library saw an increase in our patrons’ interest in programming that allowed them to explore different hobbies,” Director Tavares said. “This interest only increased during the COVID-19 outbreak with people stuck at home. It is our goal with virtual hobby programs to get those not ready to be out in public yet involved within the community once again.”
Through this endeavor, the library also hopes to further expand upon their previously existing partnerships with local museums and cultural attractions. Through virtual programming, it’s the library’s goal to highlight their museum pass program and support these local attractions while continuing to provide enrichment opportunities.
At this time, the library is closed to the public until further notice, but curbside pickup is available for patrons. Patrons can place their holds through the library’s request form, SAILS mobile app, online catalog, or by calling 508-669-6421. When patrons’ holds are ready, the library will set up an appointment for patrons to pick up their items.
The library is also accepting book returns through their book drop.
