DIGHTON —  The Town of Dighton recently hosted the grand opening of the town’s newly built animal shelter.

On Saturday, Feb. 8, the Town of Dighton invited residents and their furry friends to attend the grand opening of the new shelter. At the event, State Senator Marc Pacheco and Board of Selectmen Chairman Ken Pacheco offered remarks for those in attendance.

The grand opening allowed residents to explore the newly re-purposed construction trailers that were previously stationed at the police station. The trailers received new roofing and a renovated interior with new flooring and new spaces designed for a washroom, office, quarantine room and separate spaces for cats and dogs. The animal shelter also features play areas inside and outside for dogs and pictures of adopted animals, including a previously adopted pig from last year.

“The new shelter is a much needed and exciting addition to our town,” said Town Administrator Aronstein. “Our old shelter did not have the necessary resources available for us to provide adequate services and care for the animals that came through the door. Our new shelter will help us to provide animals with a comfortable place to stay while we care for them.”

The project received an initial $25,000 in state funds from State Senator Marc Pacheco to begin the project. The Town of Dighton matched those funds at a Town Hall meeting in October 2018.

The project began under the guidance and leadership of Building Commissioner James Aguiar, who also manages facilities maintenance for the town, and Michael Berube and Joe Simao of the town’s highway department. Animal Control Officer Stacy Ferry assisted them throughout the process with thorough research into what interior paint colors would have the most calming effect on distressed animals.

“The opening of this new animal shelter will allow for the Town of Dighton to partner with local organizations and host more animal-friendly events,” said Ferry. “These possible partnership opportunities will allow us to allocate more resources to animals in need. I look forward to the bright future we have here at the new shelter.”

The new animal shelter will host the town’s annual Rabies Vaccination Day on Saturday, April 25 from 2 to 3 p.m. where residents can bring their pets to be vaccinated.

At this time, the Town of Dighton Animal Shelter has only one resident, a feral cat that was found half-frozen in a well.

The shelter will continue to take in all sorts of animals and available space will be dependent on the number and size of animals already in the shelter. Anyone interested in visiting the shelter may do so by making an appointment with Animal Control Officer Stacy Ferry at animalcontrol@dighton-ma.gov.
